Now that the cold weather has set in for winter please remember that when water freezes it expands. Frozen water means broken pipes and that is expensive to repair. If you plan on closing your spa don't just drain it, call a professional to winterize it. You will be glad you did.

Water care
This is a relatively new heater tube (~2 years old) which has corroded to the point of needing replacement due to improper water care. This could have been prevented.

Poor water care
Hot tub water needs to be changed every 3 months. This tub wasn't heating because the filters hadn't been cleaned in ... who knows how long. Time to change the water now so I put in a spa flushing agent. It's not supposed to foam up like this. This tub water is nasty and smells.
Proprietary parts
Just one more reason why not to put a heater element into a plastic tube. Any time a manufacturer tries to re-invent the wheel it ends up costing the consumer more. Everyone else puts their heater elements into a stainless steel tube. This didn't need to happen.

Hot tub sizes are not all what they seem
This manufacturer boasts that this hot tub is 36" deep. Look at the 6 tubes on the bottom of the footwell, they are holding the tub 5" up from the ground. That makes this hot tub only 31" deep. When looking at buying a hot tub compare tubs by the amount of water it holds as well as its size.

Antifreeze
This guy just bought a home which came with a hot tub. When he went to open it up he noticed the pink antifreeze in the filter area which was used to winterize it. Would you let your kids sit in a hot tub with antifreeze in it? Of course not. There are healthier and better options for this sort of thing.

High electricity bill for this customer
This is a view from the bottom of a hot tub looking up.This hot tub has hardly no insulation on it at all. That would have been fine if It had been a PROPERLY perimeter insulated hot tub with insulation on the floor. This was a partial foam tub with little to no foam where a customer would never see. Among other things we are insulating this tub properly. This should significantly reduce his hydro bill.

Zach working hard on a hot tub
Zach replacing a broken manifold on a full foam hot tub in Ottawa. This damage could have been prevented if if the tub was equipped with a spa monitor. Sometimes it's the little things that can save you thousands of $

5 More Things About Spa Purchase in Ottawa
When doing research into buying a hot
tub or spa, insulation is one of the most important features to consider.
Heat lost is money burned, and frozen pumps and pipes can be a major expense. There
are two main types of insulation used in hot tubs. Urethane foam and styrene
foam board.
Urethane
foam is common amongst manufacturers. The foam is sprayed into the cabinet of
the tub where it expands and fills the entire cabinet. But this is a lazy
approach and often the manufacturers envelope the piping and cabling as well.
Obviously if you need a repair, driving up the cost of finding problems. It
also heats up as it cures which attacks glued joints and can cause the glue to
break down and cause leaks. From a service perspective, urethane insulated hot
tubs and spas are a nightmare to work on.
We all know that heat rises, which means
that your spa or hot tub in the Ottawa winter looses its heat through the top,
which makes covers a necessary consideration. Heat retention means saving money
on power, repairs and water changes. Thickness is one measurement of covers,
but you will also want to understand density. Thickness is a
measure of durability, if you consider the weight of snow, kids, pets and other
things that may inadvertently end up on top of your spa.
Ozonators wear out.
Common ozonators like corona discharge or ultraviolet will last for
approximately 9,000 hours of running time. For most of us this means three
years of operation, and when they fail all sanitizing power is lost. But do you
really need an ozonator? There have been a lot of changes and improvements to
Spa and Hot Tub technology and if you have a Salt water Spa, then you don’t
need one at all. But if have an ozonator on your current tub, and if has been more
than three years since you checked it, then you may want to check it again.
You have invested a lot in your hot tub or are about to
invest a lot in a spa, and if you do it right, you can have a clean, efficient
tub that will last a decade with minimal upkeep and maintenance. We are

5 More Things About Buying a Hot Tub in Ottawa
If you are a hot tub or spa owner in Ottawa, you should know that an
energy efficient hot tub will save you money. Purchasing an energy efficient
hot tub will save you a considerable amount of money over the lifetime of your
hot tub or Spa.
Balancing your water refers to the acidity
levels and is important because the clarity and effectiveness of the sanitizing
agents depends on the acidity (pH) of the water. Of course, if you buy a Salt Water Spa, then
this process becomes simplified. But for non-salt water, this is done by
occasionally adding small amounts of acid or base to the water, usually in
granular form. Measuring the sanitizer and acid levels is quick and easy,
usually with a litmus-style test strip that changes color when dipped in the
water.
Some hot tub and spa centres in Ottawa offer tubs with LED
lighted jet packages, waterfall features, sunken speaker and media sound system
with iPod or MP3 waterproof housing, speakers and subwoofers. It is important to
consider that these are the most likely repairs that will need to be made.
These design features are very attractive to make a spa seem sexier, but they
drive up the price and add complication.
Before you commit to lighted jets, pop up speakers or other extra
features consider the cost of repair.

invest a lot in a spa, and if you do it right, you can have a clean, efficient
tub that will last a decade with minimal upkeep and maintenance. We are
